Spain - The City of Valencia

Overview

The wonderful medieval city of Valencia, situated half way down the east coast of Spain, is the perfect location for a city break in location costa blanca. The city boasts a large selection of attractions to suit all budgets and tastes. Many flock to Valencia for the shopping and fashion, whilst others who are more interested in the museums and galleries in the city, as well as the history.

Things to do in Valencia City

Those interested in wonderful architecture should head to the city Cathedral in the old town and marvel at its beauty and old artefacts housed in the museum. Those feeling adventurous can climb to the top of the bell tower for some beautiful panorama over the city. The cathedral is situated close to a popular square which is a popular area for people watching and drinking a cold drink or cup of coffee. The area also has some fantastic restaurants and bars in the Barrio de Carmen which is also a great place to go for some evening drinks.

Many will enjoy the interesting science museum which contains large amount of material and many interactive exhibitions. A short walk from the coast you will find the splendid Aquarium which is one of the largest of its kind in the world and certainly the biggest in the EU. The Palau de les Artes is a splendid location for listening to the many concerts and festivals put on at the Opera house throughout the year. Particularly pleasant are the frequent open air concerts which are perfect on a hot summers evening. Those who like art should not miss the institute of modern art for some local works of art. The institute also houses a decent restaurant as well as a good shop which will provide you with some excellent souvenirs.

For a spot of history head to the old town and check out the old Mercardo Central which is one of the longest running markets in Europe. Here you can buy all traditional market wares including local crafts, fresh seafood, fruit and veg as well as traditional crafts and clothing.

Others flock to the beautifully clean beaches and crystal clear sea in order to catch sun rays or take a dip in the ocean. Good public transport networks exist to transport you from the city to the beaches of La Malvarrosa or Las Arenas a short journey away.
